Matabeleland North – The ongoing rehabilitation of the Victoria Falls–Bulawayo Road, a vital artery linking the renowned tourism hub of Victoria Falls to Zimbabwe’s second-largest city, Bulawayo, is making substantial progress. This long-overdue upgrade is poised to enhance travel safety, stimulate tourism, and bolster regional trade.

The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development is
leading the project in response to escalating concerns about the road’s
deteriorating condition, which had been marred by numerous potholes,
cracks, and uneven pavement.

During a recent site visit, the Provisional Minister, Hon Richard Moyo, underscored the critical economic significance of the highway. “This is more than just a road. It is a gateway to one of our most prized tourism destinations and a key route for cargo movement within the SADC region,” said Hon Minister Moyo.

The rehabilitation entails comprehensive patching and resurfacing of damaged sections, full reconstruction of severely degraded stretches, and significant improvements to the drainage system.

he initiative has garnered widespread approval from motorists, many of whom stressed the urgency for swift and high-quality completion. “We travel this route regularly, and the state of the road was a nightmare. This rehabilitation is long overdue,” commented Mr Nkululeko Ndlovu, a local bus driver.

Tourism operators in Victoria Falls also welcomed the project, highlighting that enhanced road access will attract more domestic tourists and lower transportation expenses for businesses.

he works are being carried out in phases to alleviate traffic disruptions, with clearly marked diversions and signage to guide motorists. Authorities have urged drivers to exercise patience and vigilance while construction continues.

Upon completion, the refurbished Victoria Falls–Bulawayo Road is expected to improve regional connectivity, reduce vehicle maintenance costs, and drive economic growth across Matabeleland and the wider region.
