Lupane is set to make history as it launches its first official Junior Football League, with Under-15 and Under-18 boys’ teams preparing to compete on the weekend of 13–14 September 2025.
The league features five competitive teams in each age group. The Under-15 division includes Super Eagles, Lupane Celtics, Lupane City, Ceballos Academy, and St Luke’s United. In the Under-18 category, Matshakayile, Lupane City, Ceballos Academy, St Luke’s United, and Super Eagles will battle for supremacy.
“This initiative is a game-changer,” said Pride Ngwenya, head coach at Ceballos Academy. “We’ve been dreaming of a structured league where boys can sharpen their talent and compete with pride. This is how stars are made, through proper grooming from the grassroots.”
More than just football skills are at stake. The league aims to tackle social challenges by providing a positive outlet to keep boys engaged, diverting them from drug abuse, early criminal behavior, and idleness.
Mkhululi Siwela, representative of the Lupane Football League (LFL), expressed excitement about the impact of the league: “Lupane has long been overlooked when it comes to youth development in sports. But that changes now. We are building future national players and future responsible men. These leagues will teach discipline, resilience, and teamwork.”
The initiative has also drawn praise at the national level. Mr. Muzamba Alternate, from the Ministry of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, commended the effort: “This is a shining example of how sport can transform communities. The government fully supports initiatives like this that create opportunities, build character, and bring people together.”
The success of the league depends on community involvement. Schools, local businesses, and parents are urged to participate through sponsorship, mentorship, or support from the stands. Official fixtures and venues will be announced soon, fueling growing anticipation across Lupane.
“In years to come, when one of these boys dons the Warriors jersey or signs for a top-flight club, we’ll all remember this league as the birthplace of that journey,” said Mr. Siwela.
This league is more than competition; it is a movement igniting a new future for football and youth development in Lupane.
